Re: nz poultry standards wanted
I've got a copy of the poultry standards - I'll try to bring it in with me tomorrow & start typing some of these requests up - not sure I'll be able to scan the book though, as the spine doesn't like opening up very well (I have seen a copy which was in a ring binder, where you could take out &a...

Re: Please trim your trees away from power lines
hmmm, the annoying thing with this tree fall, is that it didn't actually touch my lines as it came down - but as it ripped down the other household line, it must have stressed the power pole connections & mine let go at that stage (we assume) so while I can watch neighbours trees and ask them if...

Please trim your trees away from power lines
What does that have to do with chickens I hear you ask?? well, Saturday night my neighbours trees took out our power lines.... and I had chickens hatching in the incubator and it's amazing how quickly the incubator looses heat... (and I realised it pays to have a battery powered temp/humidity gauge ...

Re: Hello Everyone, would love your help please!
Hi, I use pieces of polar fleece as the floor sometimes - non-slip and warm - just make sure it's not giving off fluff or anything, otherwise they might eat that too! Put the food in a flattish bowl, if you think they're going to loose it in the fabric. I'd also heard that chick starter no longer co...

Re: OMG - My chicken wont stop crying!!!
Hi, just a thought, if she does it again, I'd be looking to treat her for gape worm, just in case - if they were present they'd be obstructing the airway, which might have been the problem?

Re: Change in shell quality
oh, forgot to say, if you think the shell is getting thinner, have a dish of crushed oyster shell available to them, so they can boost their calcium levels (if that's the problem)...

Re: Change in shell quality
Hi, I dosed mine with flubenol (powder wormer, same sort of thing) - I didn't change to mash, I mixed a little bit of vegetable oil through the pellets (not enough to make them go soggy & collapse) and then mixed the powdered wormer through it - that way it stuck but I didn't have to change thei...

Re: Day 18!
Hi, personally I don't move/change a sitting hen's nest - she'd normally sit for a day or two over the chicks as they hatch (they may not all hatch on the same day) so she should stay on there till the last egg hatches (generally) - at that point I watch her closely & judge when to either help h...

Re: infertile drake???
At the Nationals they gave some very interesting talks and one of them outlined what must be in the chooks (and presumably ducks) diet to get viable/hatchable eggs - in particular they said they must be getting the range of vitamin B's and amino acids - so I've invested in some Vitamin B/amino acid ...

Re: Keeping ducks as slug/snail control.
Hi, I've got Khaki Campbells in the orchard and they do a better job than chooks in the orchard as they don't eat the fruit (or scratch up the ground), but they do like creating muddy puddles - I'm sure they'll eat any insect going, seen them chasing flies on a boring day, even watched in horror as ...
