Re: Strange shape eggs

do you know how old these Shavers are? are they ex-battery birds? or were they POL (point of lay)? my guess is they're ex-battery (or ex-free range), but over 18 months old - if that's the case, they've probably spent the last 12 months laying their little hearts out and are now a bit worn out it wo...

Re: Post Dog Attack Recovery Support Tips

during recovery time, if they're a bit reluctant to eat, I'd be looking for very enticing, high energy food - my favourite to perk up a chicken is actually hard boiled egg yolk (just at a time when you probably don't have any eggs!) the colour yellow seems to be very attractive to the hens and the y...

Re: Hi from Kumeu Auckland

Re: Auckland Poultry & Pigeon Show 2/3 July 2016

Jay was investigating whether it was cost effective to send birds to Chch via Air NZ, but I suspect their requirements for the cages will make it too expensive (they won't take the plastic cat carry cage type of things) - but if it was possible, there might be an Auckland bulk group being sent (one ...

Re: Sad

that's awful my vote would be dogs - and they can be very quiet - you'd think they'd bark with excitement, but I've known the result from when they didn't make a noise - they also enjoy the chase/killing and don't necessarily sit down to actually do anything with what they kill - so they wipe out al...

Re: Hen feathered cockerel

Re: Hen feathered cockerel

I had a Silver Pencilled Pekin that was confused - its one of those colours where the different sexes are quite different colours this thing hatched with colouring of a rooster, which happened to be what I wanted - but it never grew any hackles or tail feathers or bigger comb I ran it on for quite a...

Re: Hi,adding another rooster to flock

on the subject of free ranging roosters being okay - I had to separate a White Orpington rooster and a Silver Spangled Hamburg cockerel this morning - they've done a blood bath & obviously fighting through all the rain this morning - they're both looking really sorry for themselves, the Hamburg ...

Re: Gold laced Orpingtons

looks like you're on your way to laced Orpys!
you may have to breed the laced boy back to his daughter, to try to bring out any lacing in a hen, if you don't have any so far
lots of hatching, feeding & housing developing a new colour!
