How long should I keep trying with the eggs?

Post by llvonn »

This morning I woke up to 3 chicks hatched (out of a dozen eggs). How long should I keep the eggs in the incubator to check if any more come out?
Also, what would be the latest date that would be viable to hatch fertile eggs this season?

Hi Ilvon,

lovely to see you are hatching eggs in an incubator. Are they Faverolles?

I leave eggs for 3 more days just in case there's a late hatcher.

I hatch eggs for as long as I get fertile eggs which usually is February.

No more hatched. Yes, they are faverolles. I have a feeling that at least one is a rooster. My setup is much better than last time. I got a portable pet carrier from kmart. Canvas with mesh sides, so secure with visability (which, as I had a known chicken killer staying with me at the time, was important). I have plastic underneath a towel shich the chicks are on. Works well. The mesh sides are zipped so that the cord to the heat isn't in the way.

3 chicks out of 12 posted eggs in an incubator actually isn't that bad. A rooster chick will have dark feathers in his wings from early on. They can be reliably sexed at 2 weeks old so I hope you won't have more than 1 rooster. Bets of luck with raising them!

I have a feeling I have one hen, two roosters.

I will try again, but will wait until January as I will be heading away during December. I am hoping that these ones will be big enough when I leave. Might need to hand them to a friend.

Let's hope you'll get a better hatch rate next time. Best of luck!
